Transfer Lichinga - Nkholongue (2 -2½ hours)
Transport can be arranged by the lodge for guests arriving at Lichinga airport. From the provincial capital they travel 1½ hours on a paved road, passing through several villages on the Niassa High Plateau before the road descends almost 1000m through wild bushland to the lake below. The view of the far-reaching plains of Niassa, the lake, and the Malawian shore on the other side of the lake are spectacular.
Just before the district capital, Metangula, there is a turnoff southwards onto a bumpy, natural road which leads through forests and across several hills and after 11km (40 minutes), reaches the village of Nkholongue and Mbuna Bay located directly on the shore of the lake.
Getting here by boat (Lake Malawi)
Guests travelling from Malawi should profit of the occasion and take a trip with the legendary “Ilala Ferry”, the only passenger boat connecting Malawi and Mozambique. It stops at Metangula twice a week: On Saturday northbound coming from Monkey Bay and on Tuesday southbound coming from Likoma Island and Cobué (moz.).
The latest means of transport from February 2009 onwards is a small new passenger boat cruising weekly all along the Mozambican coastline. It stops at Mbuna Bay on request.
